Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services: Barriers come in all shapes and size. By 2012, every business and organization in Ontario will have to provide customer service that is accessible to everyone. Just like the service that can be found here.
Jeff: Here we are, minister, and this is a one of the rooms that the Hampton Inn offer to persons who require accessibility. Very, very spacious, again very, very accessible. I mean, from features of having the light switches at my height, and wonderful for children. This particular room offers a sink and a fridge, all are accessible with the cut counter. And very, very spacious so that I can get around as a person in a wheelchair, and everything is at my reach. Which is so important so that I don't have to worry, I can simply come in and put my luggage down and get comfortable.
Minister: Sometimes it requires a little effort, but we know that people with disabilities have an estimated spending power of about 25 billion dollars each year in Canada. So that's a market that no business can afford to overlook.
Jeff: Thank you very much and with the lever taps it's easy to access and there's even a shower bench and I like this because a lot of times I've traveled and have been to different hotels where I get into an accessible room but then I still have to ask for the bath bench or the shower bench. And I can simply because its light pick it up put it in the tub so that when I take my shower I can transfer from my wheelchair to the shower bench.
Minister: Or it could be put there by a staff person before you come in.
Jeff: Very good point, absolutely, so this is very nice.
Minister: We are developing other accessibility standards in the field of transportation, employment, communications and built environment. These standards will ensure that people with disabilities can equally participate in their communities like all other citizens of Ontario.
