The act requires Ontario government ministries and agencies to:

  • develop annual accessibility plans
  • make them available to the public.

The purpose of these plans is to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility in all aspects of the organization's operations, including:

  • legislation
  • policies
  • programs
  • practices
  • services.

The act also required the Ontario government to:

  • make its buildings accessible to people with disabilities to the level required by the:
    • Building Code Act, 1992
    • Ontario Realty Corporation's Standards for Barrier Free Design of Ontario Government Facilities
  • consider accessibility when purchasing goods and services
  • make its Internet sites accessible to people with disabilities, unless it is not technically feasible to do so
  • provide its publications to people with disabilities in a format that is accessible to them, unless it is not technically feasible to do so
  • accommodate the accessibility needs of its employees, or applicants for employment, who have disabilities
  • train Ontario Public Service employees on their obligations to accommodate employees with disabilities
  • consider accessibility when funding capital projects (new building or renovations).
